Unfiltered: Tim Benz and Mark Madden discuss the Super Bowl, Steelers, Penguins, T.J. Watt

Tim Benz and Mark Madden, calling in from Las Vegas, return for this week’s edition of “Unfiltered” on TribLive’s Facebook page to talk about the Super Bowl, T.J. Watt, the Steelers’ outlook, as well the Penguins’ troubles and GM search.

Madden starts by saying that betting against Tom Brady was folly. “He absolutely dominated the game,” says Madden. Kansas City never had a chance to win the game for two reasons: their beat-up offensive line and Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady.

“It was a mismatch of grotesque proportions, although we never could have seen that coming going in,” says Madden.

The guys talk about how Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was harassed all game, but tried to make things happen, and how the Bucs’ offense was effective and controlled most of the game.

“The Bucs dominated the game,” says Madden. “It wasn’t even as close as the 31-9 score indicates.”

The guys talk about the future of the Steelers, who have issues on both the defensive and offensive lines.

“I think the Steelers are going to stink,” says Madden, who goes on to declare a dire prediction for the local sports scene. “In fact, I think we’re in for a nuclear winter here in Pittsburgh sports. I think it’s going to be a long time until the dawn. And that goes for every single one of Pittsburgh’s sports teams.”

Benz agrees, saying we are entering an era similar to the 1980s.

The guys discuss the troubles facing the Penguins. Madden says the team is terrible: the goaltending stinks, they haven’t won, they have not led by 2 goals this season. Madden says, “They are bad beyond description.”

The guys think the team is looking for a new general manager that thinks the team can win now, but while the Penguins might sneak into the playoffs, Madden and Benz don’t see this team winning big for several season.

The guys also talk about the outrage of some fans about Steelers linebacker T.J. Watt not winning NFL Defensive Player of the Year award, the state of the Pirates and MLB, and answer readers comments.
