U mad, bro?: Readers bubbling over Mitch Trubisky's future, state of Pirates for Opening Day

Pirates center fielder Bryan Reynolds talks with owner Bob Nutting on March 17 at LECOM Park in Bradenton, Fla.

I’ve got nothing to be angry about this week. I’m taking off a day early. I’m going to Boston for the Frozen Four. I’ll see some of my family that I haven’t seen since the pandemic hit.

I cleaned up at the casino on some Final Four and hockey bets. I got to spend some time at the old college campus. I mean, it was even sunny in Syracuse (for a few hours).

Life was going along swimmingly. Until … I realized it was Thursday and time for your “U mad, bro?” emails and tweets.

Oof. I think some of you gave up hope for Lent. Thanks for the buzzkill.

That said, in the case of the Pirates, I can’t blame you.

Let’s start with Robert. He was a big fan of last week’s “Madden Monday” podcast, particularly the optimistic tone about new quarterback Mitch Trubisky.

“You win the Oscar for the dumbest sports column so far this year! Congratulations as it will not be your first or last!”

I’m not sure an Oscar is given out for sports column writing. You might be thinking of the Razzies.

But if you are right, I can assure you I have written columns that were much dumber than that one was.

Maybe this is a “Scent of a Woman” type of moment. Not Al Pacino’s best work, but more of a career achievement type of award.

If so, I graciously accept.

David emails regarding the theory that Mike Tomlin’s public interest in all the NFL draft-eligible quarterbacks is nothing but a diversionary tactic by the Steelers.

“Given Tomlin’s inability to handle the game clock, I doubt he has the ability for deep intrigue to confuse other teams that probably aren’t paying attention to Coach .500. I think the case is, he is doing what interests him and is blind to the pathetic team he has made of the Pirates. Oops… Steelers.”

Things with the Steelers may be bad, David. But they aren’t that bad. Yet.

Now, if the Steelers pick John Van Benschoten in the first round and immediately convert him to an offensive lineman, then you might be onto something.

Glenn isn’t mad. He just has a question about the NFL’s overtime rules changes.

“Do you think the NFL Rule changes in overtime in the NFL playoffs can benefit the Steelers or not?”

Glenn, the Steelers have lost their last four playoff games by a combined score of 171-117. I’m not sure what happens in overtime is a very big concern.

John isn’t happy with Pitt basketball coach Jeff Capel.

“I’ve been giving Jeff Capel the benefit of the doubt these past few years because the team showed glimpses but never achieved consistency. However, when he said, ‘We have to get better players …we have to recruit better …’ I thought to myself, what the (heck) has he been doing since he got here? Wasn’t that his job from day 1?”

Hey, somebody had to go shopping for that “steel fist” statue he gave to Mike Krzyzewski, right?

I’ll tell you something else he isn’t doing — keeping his own players from getting in the transfer portal before they develop in Oakland.

Frank was not happy for North Carolina after they beat Duke on Saturday night in the Final Four.

I’ve lived in NC for almost 20 years. Nothing more obnoxious than an UNC fan.

I’ve concluded two things from this email.

1. Frank was very pleased with Kansas’ comeback in the championship Monday night.

2. Frank has never met a Duke fan.

Finally, let’s end with “PittsburghGuy2021.” He is definitely in midseason form when it comes to Pirates sarcasm.

“I see Austin Meadows was traded from the Rays to the Tigers. Please tell me Henry Davis going from the Pirates to the Rays isn’t somehow part of the deal.”

Actually, I just checked with the league office. Yes. That is part of the deal.

Not only that, but the Pirates are also being forced to reacquire Chris Archer (from his new team, the Twins) for Bryan Reynolds.

(Psst! I don’t need spring training for Pirates sarcasm either.)
