A sports section featuring an in-depth story on Erik Karlsson was part of a portfolio that helped the Tribune-Review win a top-10 award from the Associated Press Sports Editors.

The Tribune-Review again was selected by Associated Press Sports Editors (APSE) as one of the top 10 daily sports sections in the country for its circulation division.

The Trib also received Top 10 honors for its print section in 2020 and ’21 and digital recognition for TribLive content in 2022.

Results of the 2023 APSE Section Contest recently were announced.

“This honor is a testament to the tireless efforts and exceptional skills of our sports journalists, whose passion for storytelling shines through in all the content they produce,” Trib executive editor Luis Fabregas said. “We extend our sincere thanks to the APSE for this acknowledgment, and remain committed to serving our readers with the same level of professionalism that earned us this prestigious accolade.”

Entrants submit sports sections from specific days — along with samples of their choosing — from the 2023 calendar year.

Sections are judged on game and event coverage, news, features and opinion, and are supported by scores, results and standings that reflect the interest of the readership.

An emphasis is shown to sections that appeal to the fanatic as well as the casual fan and attempt to satisfy a range of readership diversity.

The Trib’s section entry included an NFL season preview, a 1-on-1 interview with Pirates chairman Bob Nutting, an in-depth look at the Penguins’ signing of Erik Karlsson and a college football preview edition.

The other nine newspapers honored in the B Division were the Courier Journal, IndyStar, Knoxville News Sentinel, Las Vegas Review-Journal, Omaha World-Herald, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Buffalo News, Oklahoman and Salt Lake Tribune.

Honorable mention went to The Toledo Blade, Cincinnati Enquirer, Kansas City Star and Tennessean.

In addition to the section honor, the Trib’s Jerry DiPaola and Bill Schackner were recognized as Top 10 finalists in the Projects category for their report on the resurgence of Pitt athletics.

This six-story package highlighted athletic director Heather Lyke’s leadership, the effort of donors such as Chris Bickell, contributions from alumnus Pat Bostick, the impact of administrative support for the men’s basketball program and expectations for the football team.
