The Tri-State PGA announced Friday the Amateur will return Aug. 14 at Chartiers Country Club.

The last time the Amateur was held was in 2012.

After coronavirus restrictions forced the WPGA to cancel a few early season tournaments, leaving its annual schedule lighter than usual, the organization decided to bring the tournament back.

The Western Pennsylvania Golf Association Amateur was postponed July 6, but no new date has been set.

Terry Teasdale, WPGA executive director, said the organization is still planning to hold the event.

Sunnehanna Amateur on tap

The Sunnehanna Amateur in Johnstown will begin Tuesday. The tournament was postponed in early June.

A practice round for contestants will begin 11 a.m. Monday.

Local entrants include the Hannastown Golf Club trio of Mark Goetz, Palmer Jackson and Gregor Meyer.

Also in the tournament are Pinecrest’s Nathan Smith, Peters Township’s Connor Schmidt and New Castle’s Evan Long.

The tournament concludes Friday.

Jackson struggles at Southern Amateur

The Notre Dame sophomore shot an 8-over par 80 and finished 63rd with a 16-over 304. He had one birdie during his final round.

Jackson, a Franklin Regional grad, doesn’t have much rest for his next event, the Sunnehanna Amateur. He’s also entered in the Western Amateur the following week in Carmel, Ind
