Steelers meet with top-rated cornerbacks Deandre Baker, Byron Murphy
The Pittsburgh Steelers are taking a look at two of the top-rated cornerbacks in the NFL Draft.
At UPMC Rooney Sports Complex on Monday for predraft visits were projected first-round corners DeAndre Baker of Georgia and Byron Murphy of Washington.
Also visiting is outside linebacker Ben Banogu of TCU.
After they tied a franchise low with eight interceptions in 2018, the Steelers are looking for defensive backs who can produce turnovers, and Baker and Murphy had impressive college careers.
Baker (5-foot-11, 193 pounds) is a player who was mocked to the Steelers early in the offseason, before they signed Steven Nelson in free agency. Baker won the Jim Thorpe Award as the nation’s top defensive back and was a first-team All-American after his senior year at Georgia. He had 40 tackles, two interceptions and 10 passes defensed.
Murphy (5-11, 190) is another cornerback who is expected to be on the board when the Steelers make their selection at No. 20 overall. In his final year at Washington, Murphy led the team with four interceptions, returning one for a touchdown. He also had 13 passes defensed and 58 tackles.
Banogu is expected to be picked later in the draft. He is a 6-3, 250-pound edge rusher who began his college career at Louisiana-Monroe before transferring to TCU for his final two seasons. He was the Big 12 Defensive Newcomer of the Year in 2017 when he had 8 1/2 sacks and 16 1/2 tackles for loss. In 2018, he had 18 tackles for loss and 8 1/2 sacks among 57 tackles.
The Steelers have conducted 20 of their 30 official visits. That total doesn’t account three local players — Miles Sanders, David Long and Dravon Henry — who visited.
Of the 23 predraft visitors, the Steelers have hosted six linebackers, five running backs, five cornerbacks, three wide receivers, three safeties and one tight end.
Here is the list of players the Steelers previously hosted:
April 1: RB Miles Sanders (Penn State), RB Damien Harris (Alabama), TE Alize Mack (Notre Dame), WR Andy Isabella (UMass), WR Dillon Mitchell (Oregon)
April 2: RB Mike Weber (Ohio State), RB Jordan Scarlett (Florida), RB Travis Homer (Miami), WR Miles Boykin (Notre Dame), LB David Long (West Virginia)
