The Steelers’ Terrell Edmunds goes through drills during OTAs Thursday, May 23, 2019 at UPMC Rooney Sports Complex.

Terrell Edmunds is entering his second season with the Pittsburgh Steelers. That familiarity doesn’t mean the 22-year-old strong safety isn’t in awe when in the company of one of the best to play his position.

Several former and current Steelers players recently conducted a fan camp in Mexico City. Edmunds attended as did Donnie Shell, an inaugural member of the Steelers’ Hall of Honor.

In a promotional video released by the team, Shell said he and Edmunds boarded a flight in Charlotte and spent the time on the airplane forming a bond.

“I talked old school. He talked new school,” Shell said.

Edmunds admitted he was “starstruck for a second” while talking to Shell, whose 51 career interceptions remain the most in NFL history for a strong safety.

Shell was a five-time Pro Bowl selection and four-time Super Bowl champion in his 14 seasons with the Steelers. Many in the game believe he should be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The Steelers put him in the Hall of Honor in 2017.

“It’s always nice to talk to a legend, to pick his brain, really,” Edmunds said. “Just to mimic anything he did on the field would be tremendous. I’m trying to mimic my game after guys like him, like Troy (Polamalu), other big-time guys that came from Steeler Nation.”

Shell said he expects Edmunds to “make a lot of plays” in his sophomore NFL season.

Also making the trip to Mexico City was outside linebacker Bud Dupree and former players Max Starks, Charlie Batch and Rocky Bleier.
