Temporary recruiting calendar proposed for Division I men's basketball
The plan is temporary, but it is a plan nonetheless.
The NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Oversight Committee on Monday endorsed a fall recruiting calendar which was devised by the National Association of Basketball Coaches and other collaborators.
The outline is meant to reestablish important recruiting dates that had been thrown into disorder by the coronavirus pandemic.
The calendar still would need to be approved by the Division I Council for it to move forward.
Some of the key points:
• A “quiet” period would last into August and college coaches could only meet with recruits during on-campus visits.
• The “dead” period, where coaches can have no face-to-face contact with prospects, is set to expire July 31.
• Teams could send two coaches to NCAA non-scholastic certified events the weekend of Aug. 15-16 and 22-23 — most notably AAU tournaments — assuming the events can be contested under proper health and safety guidelines.
• In-person visits to high school or two-year college campuses, scholastic activities, open gyms and fall leagues would then be made during select times in September.
