Steelers tight end Xavier Grimble play against the Buccaneers in the first quarter Friday, Aug. 9, 2019 at Heinz Field.

The Pittsburgh Steelers waived tight end Xavier Grimble with an injury settlement, according to an NFL transactions report.

The team has yet to announce the move.

The 6-foot-4, 261-pound Grimble was placed on the injured reserve with a calf injury Sept. 25, two days after the Steelers sent a fifth-round draft pick to Seattle in a trade for tight end Nick Vannett.

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said Grimble was injured against the San Francisco 49ers.

Grimble, who signed a $2.02 million restricted free-agent deal in the offseason, had 23 receptions for 239 yards and three touchdowns in three-plus seasons with the Steelers. His first catch was a touchdown, against the Cincinnati Bengals in 2016. He had 11 receptions for 118 yards and two touchdowns that season.

But Grimble had only six catches for 86 yards last season. And he might best be remembered for costing the Steelers a touchdown when he fumbled out of the end zone after a goal-line collision with safety Will Parks in a 24-17 loss at Denver last November. The Steelers have three tight ends on the 53-man roster: Vannett, Vance McDonald and rookie Zach Gentry.
