One positional experiment has run its course for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Christian Scotland-Williamson, a tight end who had never played professional football until 2018, was waived by the team on Monday afternoon.

The 6-foot-9, 274-pound former British rugby player spent the past two years as an exemption on the practice squad as part of the NFL’s International Pathways program. He was signed to a futures contract after last season.

The Steelers liked the improvement Scotland-Williamson made from his first to second season with the team. Still, at 27 years old, he faced an uphill climb to earn a roster spot.

From 2014-17, Scotland-Williamson played for the Worchester Warriors of the English Premiership rugby league.

The move leaves the Steelers with 89 players on their offseason roster.
