Steelers vs. Bengals: What they're saying in Cincinnati after loss

Bungled.

“Boink.”

Bungled again.

The Cincinnati Bengals had several chances to survive a horrible start, in which quarterback Joe Burrow played catch with Steelers defenders in tossing four interceptions. Still, apparently long snappers are important. The Bengals lost theirs, and a stellar kicking game turned putrid.

A blocked extra point stole the win from the Bengals at the end of regulation.

A missed field goal in overtime gave the Steelers more life.

Steelers kicker Chris Boswell’s potential game-winning field goal clanked loudly off the uprights.

“Boink.”

Bungled again.

The Steelers still pulled it out at the end of overtime with a second chance at a field goal. This time, Boswell drilled a 53-yarder.

Game over. Finally.

“Joe Burrow’s turnovers cost the Bengals the game,” wrote Kelsey Conway of the Cincinnati Enquirer.

“Without watching the film, Burrow was unable to give a breakdown of each of his four interceptions,” she wrote. “But one thing was clear: He looked off from the beginning of the game.

“Whether it was the fact he did not play with his four new offensive linemen in a game setting or missing two weeks of practice due to his appendectomy, it’s uncertain what was at the root of his turnovers.”

No sweep this season over the Steelers for Cincinnati.

The headline for website Cincy Jungle told the tale: “It’s just Week 1, but ouch.”

“The game would’ve gotten out of hand had Cincinnati’s defense not stuffed the Steelers at the goal-line on the ensuing drive. Instead of stepping on the Bengals’ throat, the Steelers settled for three,” wrote John Sheeran. “Pittsburgh’s early offensive struggles were met with a stout Bengals’ defense, but turnovers from the offense made the first half all about the visitors.”

Those clips of dejected Bengals fans leaving the game on the escalator at Paul Brown Stadium have returned.

“Sunday’s game certainly was unlike any other in the history of the rivalry,” wrote Dave Clark of the Enquirer.

The Bengals are off to Dallas next week.

The Steelers host the New England Patriots.
