Steelers partner to help send pizzas to health care workers during pandemic
The initiative “Pizza vs. Pandemic” was launched to support health care workers trying to stop the spread of covid-19 by arranging for pizzas from independent owners to be sent to care centers, hospitals and clinics around the country.
The Pittsburgh Steelers are doing their part, too.
The Steelers are among area businesses trying to feed such workers thanks to a partnership with Slice, an online and mobile ordering platform; and the non-profit Slice Out Hunger.
Since the Pizza vs. Pandemic campaign was launched March 21, the initiative has raised more than $260,000 while delivering 6,800 pizzas throughout the country.
Slice coordinates deliveries with local pizzerias — more than 100 in the region are taking part — so that pizzas are distributed to workers.
The Steelers have a link on their web site for donations.
“People just go online to our own personal site and make a donation of any amount,” Blayre Holmes, the Steelers director of community relations, told Steelers.com. “They then reach out to local pizza shops and work with the hospitals and senior care facilities where the staff needs lunch. They set it all up with all of the specific instructions of how safe and secure everything is. Then, they deliver the pizza to the people working on the front lines.
“It’s a great way to support the local business community and the health care workers on the front line.”
