The Steelers added another tall cornerback to their secondary Thursday when they signed Derrek Thomas, formerly of the Seattle Seahawks.
To make room for Thomas on the 91-man roster, the Steelers waived injured cornerback Herb Waters.
Thomas is 6-foot-3, 189 pounds and ran a 4.44 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine. Projected to be taken in the sixth or seventh round, Thomas went undrafted and signed with Seattle as a priority free agent.
The Seahawks waived Thomas on July 24.
Thomas started his college career at Temple and was converted from wide receiver to the secondary as a sophomore. He spent his final collegiate season at Baylor.
Waters, who spent time last year on the Steelers’ practice squad, was let go one day after sustaining a shoulder injury in practice. He had his arm in a sling Thursday afternoon.
