The first departure of the offseason for the Pittsburgh Steelers is not a player or coach, but a member of the organization’s front office.

Samir Suleiman, the team’s football administration coordinator who helped managed the salary cap, is leaving to take a similar job with the Carolina Panthers.

Panthers owner David Tepper was a former minority owner with the Steelers, and ESPN reported in December that Tepper may try to lure some Steelers executives away from Pittsburgh. Last year, Tepper hired Mark Hart, the Steelers vice president for development, to fill a similar role in Carolina.

Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert’s contract expires after the NFL Draft, and team president Art Rooney II said he was hopeful of signing Colbert to an extension.

Suleiman worked closely with Steelers vice president of football and business administration Omar Khan on managing the team’s salary cap since he joined the organization in 2013. He also assisted in contract negotiations, team logistics and scouting.

Suleiman previously spent 10 years with the St. Louis Rams as director of football administration before being promoted to director of football operations, making him that organization’s No. 2 football executive.

Suleiman also spent two years with the Jacksonville Jaguars as manager of contract information.
