Mike Tomlin embraces challenge of third 'game of the week' for Steelers

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin watches from the sideline in the first half of an NFL football game against the Tennessee Titans Sunday, Oct. 25, 2020, in Nashville, Tenn.

For the Pittsburgh Steelers, the challenge isn’t just another matchup against an AFC North contender, it’s a second consecutive road game and one that comes against a third consecutive team that enters with either one or zero losses.

Such are the stakes when the Steelers face the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday at M&T Bank Stadium.

“It’s cool to be in what we believe is the game of the week for the third week in a row,” coach Mike Tomlin said at his weekly press conference. “We’re humbly honored to be in that. We like to show that respect by how we prepare and then ultimately by how we play.”

The Steelers answered the first two tests, dispatching the then 4-1 Cleveland Browns, 38-7, before knocking the Tennessee Titans from the ranks of the unbeaten with a 27-24 victory Sunday.

For the Steelers to remain the only undefeated team in the NFL, they must beat the two-time defending AFC North champions. The Ravens enter one game behind the 6-0 Steelers and will have an extra week of preparation after the NFL moved up the Ravens’ bye in a schedule reshuffling precipitated by the coronavirus pandemic.

The Steelers dominated the Browns at Heinz Field before heading on the road for the first time since the opening week of the season and holding on for a three-point win after nearly blowing a 20-point second-half lead against the Titans.

Can the Steelers use their play in those two games to their advantage against the Ravens?

“Maybe in terms of how we manage anxiety or things that lead up to the game and how we stay focused through preparation,” Tomlin said, “but in terms of what transpires inside the stadium or inside the white lines, no.”

Tomlin revealed two injuries that were suffered against the Titans. Reserve defensive lineman Chris Wormley has a knee injury that will require an MRI. Special teams captain Jordan Dangerfield has a quadriceps injury.

Two players who missed Sunday’s game — fullback Derek Watt (hamstring) and slot corner Mike Hilton (shoulder) — could return to practice this week.

Making his first NFL start, inside linebacker Robert Spillane injured his shoulder while making a jarring tackle on Titans running back Derrick Henry near the goal line in the fourth quarter.

“His shoulder is fine.” Tomlin said. “I’m sure there is some residue, if you will, but I don’t think it will limit his participation or preparation in any way for Baltimore.”

Here is some of what Tomlin had to say:
