The Pittsburgh Steelers will be at full strength at wide receiver Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles with the return of Diontae Johnson from concussion protocol.
Coach Mike Tomlin said Tuesday at his weekly press conference that Johnson no longer is being treated for concussion symptoms. Johnson, the Steelers’ most targeted wide receiver in the first two weeks of the season, played just 19 snaps and didn’t have a catch in Week 3 against the Houston Texans.
“He will be a full participant not only in play, but in the full week of preparation for play,” Tomlin said.
Johnson is second on the Steelers with 14 catches for 149 yards and one touchdown.
The unexpected bye week created by the coronavirus-related postponement of the Week 4 game at Tennessee did little to clarify the status of fullback Derek Watt (hamstring) and safety Marcus Allen (foot), who are two of the team’s core special teams players.
Watt has begun a running program.
“We’ll see if he can do the anticipated movements that encompass football play,” Tomlin said.
Allen ran in an indoor pool Tuesday and could run on the field later in the week, Tomlin said.
Tomlin said the bye week allowed the Steelers to “file away” preparation plans for the Titans when the game is played Oct. 25. It also helped others on the roster get healthy.
“We were able to get some minor bumps and bruises handled, and it allowed guys to catch their breath,” Tomlin said.
