Steelers place kicker Chris Boswell looks to throw on a fake field goal against the Browns in the second quarter on Sunday, Oct. 31, 2021, at FirstEnergy Stadium.

CLEVELAND — The Pittsburgh Steelers lost kicker Chris Boswell to a head injury when he was knocked to the ground on a fake field goal attempt against the Cleveland Browns.

With the score tied 3-3 and 1 minute, 45 second remaining before halftime, the Steelers attempted a fake field goal instead of having Boswell kicking a 28-yard attempt.

Boswell’s pass went out of the end zone, and he was hit by defensive end Jordan Elliott as his momentum was carrying him out of bounds. Elliott was not penalized on the play.

He did not return for the second half and was listed as being evaluated for a concussion. Boswell officially was ruled out about midway through the third quarter.

Boswell took the direct snap and rolled to his right. Tight ends Pat Freiermuth and Zach Gentry were potential targets. Freiermuth, though, was covered short of the end zone, and Gentry had four defenders surrounding him. Boswell threw high and out of the end zone before he was flattened by Elliott.

Boswell was helped to his feet and grabbed his head as he was led to the medical tent. From there, Boswell was assisted to the locker room.

Punter Pressley Harvin III handled kickoff duties for the rest of the game. The Steelers bypassed kicking an extra point and went with a failed 2-point conversion after they scored a touchdown in the third quarter.
