Steelers host WR/KR Diontae Johnson of Toledo
Diontae Johnson had a knack for finding the end zone at Toledo, which is one reason the Pittsburgh Steelers invited him to UPMC Rooney Sports Complex on Friday for a predraft visit.
Johnson, a 5-foot-10, 183-pound wide receiver/return specialist, was the lone player to visit the Steelers, giving the team 26 official visits out of 30 entering the final week of the process.
As a redshirt junior in 2018, Johnson caught eight touchdown passes while averaging 15.5 yards on 49 receptions. He was even better in 2017 when he caught 13 touchdown passes and scored touchdowns on kickoff and punt returns. He caught 74 passes for 1,278 yards – a 17.3 average – that season.
In 2018, Johnson averaged 25.8 yards on kickoff returns and 18.5 yards on punt returns.
Johnson was invited to the NFL Combine, where he ran a slowish 4.53 time in the 40-yard dash. Johnson did not run at Toledo’s pro day.
Johnson is projected to be selected in the fourth or fifth round of the draft. The Steelers, after trading All-Pro Antonio Brown, are expected to pick a receiver in the second or third rounds. Johnson could be a later-round option in case the Steelers address other positions on the second day of the three-day draft.
The Steelers have hosted 29 players overall, with three local visitors not counting against the official list.
Of those visitors, the Steelers have met with six linebackers, six running backs, five cornerbacks, four wide receivers, three safeties, three tight ends, one defensive end and one offensive lineman.
