Fans head for shelter as lightning and rain postpones the Steelers-Cardinals game twice Sunday, Dec. 3, 2023 at Acrisure Stadium.

With high winds and lightning hitting the North Shore, the Pittsburgh Steelers’ game against the Arizona Cardinals at Acrisure Stadium was delayed twice Sunday afternoon.

The first came at halftime. Play also was stopped with 7 minutes, 18 seconds left in the third quarter.

Heavy rain fell briefly late in the first half when Arizona scored a touchdown with 15 seconds before halftime to take a 10-3 lead.

Fans were informed of the inclement weather and were encouraged to seek shelter in the stadium concourses and at the FedEx Great Hall.

Kicker Chris Boswell returned to the field at halftime and attempted several field goals until officials cleared the field and sent the players back to the locker room.

Stadium officials, using information from the National Weather Service, kept fans updated on weather conditions.

Play resumed at 3:20 p.m. after a delay of approximately 35 minutes. But when heavy rains returned in the third quarter, officials stopped play at 3:39 p.m. The game was restarted at 4:32 p.m. with the Steelers trailing, 17-3.
