Steelers daily preview: Wide receivers try to build off productive preseason opener
Each day of Steelers training camp, the Trib rounds up some things to pay attention to during practice at Saint Vincent:
WHAT TO WATCH
Unsung wide receivers: While JuJu Smith-Schuster, Donte Moncrief and rookie third-rounder Diontae Johnson were rested for the preseason opener against Tamp Bay, fringe players such as Tevin Jones, Diontae Spencer and Johnny Holton took center stage. Jones caught three passes for 24 yards, including an 8-yard touchdown reception from Devlin Hodges. Holton had a 59-yard catch-and-run among his two receptions for 69 yards, and he handled two kickoff returns. Spencer caught two of four passes for 17 yards and was the only Steelers player to return a punt. He had four such returns, averaging 13 yards a try, and he took his lone kickoff return 35 yards.
End is near: The practice Sunday begins the home stretch of training camp at Saint Vincent. It is the first of four practices in the final week of training camp that are open to the public before the team heads back to UPMC Rooney Sports Complex to conclude preseason workouts.
Getting a head start: All but a handful of starters were rested or sat because of minor injuries in the opener. That figures to change slightly for the second exhibition game, which is Saturday against Kansas City. Expect the veterans on the offensive line to get more practice this week. Injured players such as Sean Davis, Vince Williams and Joe Haden may resurface on the practice field as the Steelers intensify preparations for the regular season.
Practice time: 2:55-5 p.m., Chuck Noll Field
