Andy Weidl is one step closer to a homecoming with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Weidl, a Mt. Lebanon native and Philadelphia Eagles executive, became the fifth person to receive a second interview for the team’s general manager position. Weidl interviewed Wednesday, the Steelers announced.

Weidl was a player personnel assistant with the Steelers in 1998-99 under former general manager Tom Donahoe. He served as a scout with the New Orleans Saints and Baltimore Ravens before joining the Eagles as the assistant director of player personnel in 2016. Two year later, he became the organization’s director of player personnel, and in 2019 he was given the title of vice president of player personnel.

Weidl has 24 years of NFL experience, and he helped construct an Eagles roster that won Super Bowl LII. He was with the Ravens when they won Super Bowl XLVII.

Other candidates to receive a second interview are Steelers vice president of football and business administration Omar Khan; John Spytek, the vice president of player personnel for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers; Ryan Cowden, the vice president of player personnel for the Tennessee Titans; and former Steelers executive and Buffalo Bills general manager Doug Whaley.

Kevin Colbert has handled the general manager duties — even if he didn’t always have the title — since he joined the Steelers in 2000. He will remain on the job until his successor is named. Colbert, 65, is stepping aside to spend more time with his family and wants to take on a reduced role with the organization.

Brandon Hunt, the team’s pro scouting coordinator, hasn’t yet received a second interview after being among 16 candidates to participate in the initial round of interviews. Hunt, though, interviewed this week for the assistant general manager vacancy with the Buffalo Bills. Hunt previously interviewed for a position in the Eagles personnel department.
