Steelers camp report: Russell Wilson misses 3rd session in row, amps up throwing program
Russell Wilson did not practice for the third day in a row, but at least he didn’t have to wait until the end of the afternoon workout before he could throw a pass.
Wilson, whose training camp debut with the Pittsburgh Steelers has been delayed by a minor calf injury, took part in some passing drills in the individual portion of practice Saturday. The two previous days, his throwing work came after practice had concluded.
Coach Mike Tomlin sounded like that schedule might remain in place for Wilson. The Steelers hold their final practice of the heat acclimation period Sunday and have a day off Monday before they put on the pads for the first time Tuesday.
“I’m proceeding with extreme caution because we are afforded that at this time of the year,” Tomlin said, “and also because I’m just getting to know him.”
Justin Fields continued to run the first-team offense, and Kyle Allen was elevated to the No. 2 role.
The only significant injury suffered in practice was to tight end Rodney Williams, who appeared in 13 games last season primarily on special teams. Williams landed on his shoulder near the sideline while trying to catch a pass. Tomlin said Williams injured his AC joint and could be out a “number of days.”
Left guard Isaac Seumalo was given what Tomlin termed a “maintenance day,” as he wore a bucket hat and watched practice from the sideline.
Tomlin said he will rotate other veterans out of the lineup in coming days.
“It provides an opportunity for young guys to get additional reps and elevated reps against more experienced competition in some instances,” Tomlin said.
Spencer Anderson, a seventh-round pick in 2023, filled in for Seumalo at left guard with the first-team offense. He remained on the field with the second team but switched to right guard. Anderson made the 53-man roster last year and appeared in eight games.
“He’s an example of what I’m talking about,” Tomlin said. “We expect some growth from him. He’s a second-year guy, so Isaac having a day off allows him to work on his skills and display his skills.”
