Adding a coach with extensive college and NFL experience, the Steelers hired Glenn Thomas as offensive assistant on Wednesday.

Thomas, 45, spent the 2022 season as the offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach at Arizona State, working under former NFL head coach Herm Edwards.

Thomas’ role with the Steelers is unknown. The Steelers have a quarterbacks coach in Mike Sullivan, who is assisted by David Corley. Matt Canada, despite all of the team’s struggles on offense last year, was retained for a third season as offensive coordinator.

The only coach on offense who is not returning from the 2022 season is assistant wide receivers coach Blaine Stewart, who accepted a job on the West Virginia coaching staff in January. That created an opening which Thomas has filled.

At the college ranks, Thomas worked as an offensive coordinator or quarterbacks coach at UNLV (2020-21), Baylor (2017-19) and Temple (2015-16).

In the NFL, Thomas was the quarterbacks coach for the Atlanta Falcons from 2012-14 and worked extensively with Matt Ryan. He also spent four years as an offensive assistant with the Falcons before being promoted.

With Thomas as his coach, Ryan led the NFL with a 68.6 completion percentage in 2012, and he made two of his four career Pro Bowl appearances in that three-year span.

Thomas left the Falcons when Mike Smith was fired as head coach and replaced by Dan Quinn.

The Steelers had the NFL’s No. 23 ranked offense last season with rookie Kenny Pickett replacing Mitch Trubisky as the starting quarterback early in the year. The Steelers finished No. 26 in points, averaging 18.1 per game, and they ranked No. 24 in passing.
