Editor’s note: Leading up to a unique Pittsburgh Steelers training camp staged at Heinz Field this year, the Tribune-Review will be running through the team’s 90-man roster, assessing each player’s outlook for the 2020 season. The breakdown will go through the roster, in mostly alphabetical order, two per day, between June 9 and July 23, a day that was originally planned to be reporting day for players to camp. OT DERWIN GRAY
Experience: 2nd season
Contract status: $610,000 cap hit for 2020, will be an exclusive-rights free agent in 2021
2020 outlook: The team’s seventh-round pick from Maryland in 2019, Gray was one of two members from his draft class not to make the active roster last summer. He was signed to the practice squad and spent the season there before being signed to a futures contract. With rosters expanding, he could compete for a spot in training camp.
Bottom line: The Steelers liked the 6-foot-4, 320-pounder’s size and demeanor enough to keep him around all season. He also practiced at both interior and outside positions on the offensive line, and such versatility could come in handy. Having a year to learn the offensive line scheme could benefit Gray as he tries to earn a roster spot this year. He also could return to the practice squad for another year of seasoning.
CB JOE HADEN
Experience: 11th season
Contract status: $9.625 million cap hit for 2020, signed through 2021
2020 outlook: Haden is coming off the best of his three seasons with the Steelers. His five interceptions and 17 pass breakups warranted a third career trip to the Pro Bowl for the corner, who turned 31 in April. He and Steve Nelson are entrenched as the starting outside corners.
Bottom line: Any concerns about Haden coasting in the first year of his three-year, $32 million contract were unfounded as he returned to Pro Bowl form. His five interceptions were two more than he snagged in his first two seasons with the Steelers combined, and his 17 pass breakups ranked fourth in the NFL. He also is a leader on defense and a well-respected member of the locker room. Even at age 31, there should be no concerns about Haden’s play dropping off this season.
