Roberto Clemente Jr., shown celebrating Roberto Clemente Day in Pittsburgh by speaking to students at Center Elementary, has partnered with Steel City Brand for a clothing line collection to commemorate his father’s legacy.

A Pittsburgh-based clothing company will be honoring Roberto Clemente next month with a collection of T-shirts featuring artwork images of the Pittsburgh Pirates great.

Steel City Brand collaborated with Roberto Clemente Jr. and his wife, Kailee, on the clothing line. The coronavirus crisis slowed production, so the company is planning a May 5 release of Clemente-themed shirts in advance of Father’s Day to honor the legendary Hall of Fame right fielder.

Roberto Clemente, who had 3,000 career hits in 18 seasons and won two World Series championships with the Pirates, died in a plane crash on his way to delivering aid to earthquake victims in Nicaragua on New Year’s Eve 1972. His No. 21 has been retired by the Pirates.

“The Clemente family does a lot with a lot of different companies but this is probably the first, other than the Clemente Museum, that we got intertwined within Pittsburgh,” Kailee Clemente said. “It’s pretty cool. We had wanted to launch pre-baseball season, but we all know how that worked out. We think Steel City Brand has a Pittsburgh touch to it. It does justice to Roberto and the legacy he has here in Pittsburgh.”

Steel City Brand’s headquarters are in Oakland, and its shirts are printed in Braddock and sold at a storefront on Smithfield Street, Downtown, or online at steelcitybrand.com. The Roberto Clemente collection will include six shirts in four colors — black, gold, gray and white — in unisex sizes ranging from extra small to 3XL ($29.99) and also available in toddler and youth sizes ($24.99).

“We’re going to be releasing them as a set of father-and-son tees,” Steel City Brand CEO Brandon Grbach said. “That was one of Roberto Jr.’s requests, to celebrate his father-son legacy.”

The Clemente collection is the second in the brand’s Steel City Legends series, which debuted with a tribute to Rocky Bleier, who won four Super Bowls as a Steelers running back in the 1970s.

“We had great success with Rocky and his line,” said Grbach, who added the collection will eventually include baseball caps, keychains, pennants and pins. “We want to celebrate the iconic guys in Pittsburgh sports.”
