Starling Marte left his mark statistically on the Pirates
Starling Marte left his mark in eight seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates. A look back at some of his superlatives now that he has been traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks for two prospects and international bonus money:
- Among all position players in the franchise’s 133-year history, Marte ranks 17th in Wins Above Replacement (WAR) with 29.1, according to baseball-reference.com. Marte is 23rd among all Pirates non-pitchers in defensive WAR (5.7) and 27th in offensive WAR (21.9).
- Marte is eighth in career stolen bases (239) and in stolen bases percentage (75.63%) for the Pirates.
- He led the team in runs each of the past two seasons, led it in hits three times, and was team-best in total bases, doubles and triples once each.
- Marte was the Pirates most valuable player by WAR for a 98-win team in 2015 and again in 2016.
- Only one player (Jason Kendall) has been hit by more pitches as a Pirate (Marte has 111).
- Joins franchise icons Roberto Clemente, Dave Parker, Barry Bonds and Andy Van Slyke as only Pirates outfielders to win multiple Gold Glove Awards
- Marte led the National League in outfield assists in 2015 and 2016 and was fourth in outfield assists in 2018. His 72 career outfield assists are 15th among active players.
- Marte shined in advanced defensive metrics since moving to center field: he led MLB in range factor per game in 2019 and led the majors in total zone runs as a center fielder in 2018.
