Source: Pirates sign lefty Jose Quintana to 1-year contract
The Pittsburgh Pirates, looking for a veteran to add to a young pitching staff, have signed free-agent left-hander Jose Quintana.
Quintana, 32, agreed to a one-year contract believed to be worth $2 million, a source confirmed to the Tribune-Review.
The 6-foot-1, 220-pound Quintana has an 83-80 record with a 3.84 ERA in 283 career games, including 257 starts, with the Chicago White Sox and Cubs, Los Angeles Angels and San Francisco Giants.
Quintana has a four-pitch repertoire, with a four-seam fastball and sinker that sit at 92 mph, a curveball and changeup. He averaged 12.1 strikeouts and 5.0 walks per nine innings last season.
Quintana was selected to the 2016 AL All-Star team as an injury replacement, finishing that season 13-12 with a 3.20 ERA and 181 strikeouts in 32 starts and placing 10th in Cy Young voting.
Quintana was 0-3 with a 6.43 ERA last season, when he signed a one-year, $8 million deal with the Los Angeles Angels. After going on the injured list with shoulder inflammation in late May, he moved from the starting rotation to the bullpen upon returning in late June.
The San Francisco Giants claimed Quintana off waivers Aug. 30, but he was designated for assignment Sept. 30 after five relief appearances.
