Soosman soars into Sunnehanna Amateur lead
Despite rainy and windy condition, Spencer Soosman (University of Texas) soared into the lead of the 66th Annual Sunnehanna Amateur at Sunnehanna Country Club in Johnstown.
Soosman shot a 2-under par 68 and enters Friday’s third round with a 5-under par, 135, and a two shot lead over Hunter Wolcott (University of Tennessee), who shot a 3-under, 67. He is 3-under, 137, after two rounds.
Trevor Werbylo (University of Arizona) is tied for second with Wolcott at 3-under. He shot a 2-under, 68.
Tied for fourth is returning champion Alex Smalley (Duke) and first-round leader James Nicholas (Yale), each at 2-under, 138.
The field is loaded with some of the top college players in the country.
Franklin Regional graduate Palmer Jackson (Notre Dame), who was tied for eighth after a 1-under, 69, fired a 4-over, 74, and dropped 33rd place at 3-over, 143.
Connor Schmidt (Peters Township) and Oakmont’s Sean Knapp dropped back to 90th at 10-over, 150.
Greensburg’s Kevin Fajt dropped to 15-over par, 155. The trio has some work on movie day (round three on Friday), if they hope to play in the final round on Saturday.
