Fans sit behind the protectice netting along the left field line during the Pittsburgh Pirates’ Grapefruit League opener against the Twins Saturday, Feb. 22 at LECOM Park in Bradenton. In the wake of the coronavirus outbreak that suspended spring training, the Pirates on Sunday will for the second time professionally sanitize and deep clean the facilities at LECOM Park

The Pittsburgh Pirates’ spring training home is getting another deep cleaning to protect players and staff during the coronavirus outbreak.

About 40 Major League players and an unidentified number of the coaching staff are expected to remain in Bradenton, Fla., to utilize the facilities at LECOM Park, according to a team spokesman.

The facilities at the ballpark will be cleaned and sanitized Sunday. The clubhouse and workout areas and other facilities were previously cleaned after multiple counties in the Bradenton area confirmed residents tested positive for covid-19.

Major League Baseball on Thursday canceled the remainder of its spring training and delayed the start of its regular season by at least two weeks. For the time being, players remained in Bradenton but reports across MLB indicate some players will begin heading back to their homes or their major league team’s cities as soon as Sunday.

LECOM Park will remain closed to the public and media even as players resume informal workouts. The Pirates will have “a light workout” Monday.
