Penn State named six captains for the 2022 football season Thursday, making history with two of the choices.

Redshirt senior quarterback Sean Clifford and linebacker Jonathan Sutherland became the first four-time captains in program history.

The addition of an extra year of eligibility for players on the roster during the 2020 pandemic season made the record more reachable, of course.

Senior safety Ji’Ayir Brown, senior defensive tackle PJ Mustipher, redshirt junior offensive lineman Juice Scruggs and redshirt senior long snapper Chris Stoll were also named captain.

Clifford, a Cincinnati native, has made 33 starts under center and is third in program history in career passing yards with 7,839.

Sutherland, a native of Ottawa, has appeared in 45 career games at linebacker and safety. He had 24 tackles and an interception last season.

Mustipher, from Owings Mills, Md., was named captain for a second time. He was a second-team All-Big Ten selection by the coaches last season and is on the Outland Trophy watch list this year.

Brown, a native of Trenton, N.J., tied for the national lead with six interceptions last season and was picked by the coaches for third-team All-Big Ten honors.

Scruggs, an Erie Cathedral Prep product, was an All-Big Ten honorable mention pick by the coaches and media last season.

Stoll, from Westerville, Ohio, helped the Nittany Lions rank second in the national in net punting last season.
