Scott Morrison has been itching to get back into coaching.

After spending a season as an assistant for the women’s basketball team at Westmoreland County Community College last year, he is primed to take over the men’s program.

Morrison, a former athletic director at Yough and a Norwin alum, was named the new coach at WCCC.

He already works at the college as an athletics and recreation technician.

Now, he’s back to being a basketball technician.

“I am really excited to get going; I love coaching,” Morrison said. “I used to coach a lot of travel ball. I saw this as a great opportunity.”

Morrison, 45, is an IUP alum, but he played junior college basketball at Mercyhurst Northeast before playing college football at Saint Francis (Pa.).

He served as a football assistant at Norwin and Plum, and coached golf at Yough — the last time he was a head coach.

Morrison came to WCCC in 2022 after two years as Yough’s AD and as the Parks and Recreation Director for Sewickley Township.

“The thing about WCCC, and the (junior college) route, a lot of four-year schools have kids who leave and go into the portal,” Morrison said. “They can come to a place like WCCC where we basically have a new team every year. You don’t compete with juniors and seniors. Maybe you play a year or two and go on to a four-year school.”

For the first time this fall, WCCC will offer athletic scholarships now that it is classified as a National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II school.

Morrison said 11 of the Wolfpack’s 13 sports can offer money for sports.

“It’s an opportunity that wasn’t there in the past,” he said. “I am excited about what we have to offer.”

Exact amounts for the scholarships or money allotments for teams were not made public at this time.

WCCC athletic director Patrick Comer said, “Scott has made a huge impact on our students already here at the college. He is a great motivator and leader, and as we move to the NJCAA Division II level of competition, I am excited to see what he will be able to do with the team.”

WCCC finished 1-19 last season.
