Saint Vincent College is looking for new leadership in its men’s basketball program.

The college announced Monday it will not retain Terrance Smith as head coach and will immediately begin to search for a replacement.

Smith led the Bearcats for three seasons, compiling a record of 19-44, including a 3-22 mark this year.

A SVC hall of famer and two-time All-American who is the school’s second all-time scorer with 1,819 points, Smith led SVC to the Presidents’ Athletic Conference semifinals in his first season when the team finished 13-14.

“We thank Dr. Terrance Smith for the service and dedication he demonstrated as head men’s basketball coach for the past three seasons,” Rev. Myron Kirsch, O.S.B., Saint Vincent athletic director, said in a statement. “We wish him the best as he moves forward in his future endeavors.”

Smith serves as an assistant professor at the McKenna School of Business at Saint Vincent, teaching in the Masters of Science in Management and Operational Excellence program. He also is the director of the Kennametal Center for Operational Excellence program, and a co-chair of the McKenna School’s Sports Management program.

Smith was an assistant briefly under D.P. Harris, who guided the Bearcats for 16 years before he left in 2019 to become the men’s basketball coach, assistant athletic director and director of development at NAIA St. Thomas University in Miami Gardens, Fla.

Harris has since returned to Saint Vincent as senior director of development for athletic advancement.

Harris went 318-126 and led the Bearcats to the four NCAA Division III Tournament trips and two NAIA Sweet 16 appearances. The Bearcats were 22-5 in his last season.
