Spring football will mean more than just practice for Robert Morris coach Bernard Clark Jr.
After postponing the fall season, the Colonials on Monday released their 2021 spring schedule that includes a nonconference game against James Madison and four others against Big South Conference opponents.
With Clark in his third season, the first game will be Feb. 27 in Harrisonburg, Va., against James Madison, the FCS runner-up last season. RMU officials hope to schedule other nonconference opponents for the spring schedule.
The Big South also announced its 2021 spring football schedule, with five teams playing a four-game schedule to determine the conference’s automatic qualifier to the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) Playoffs.
Teams competing include Charleston Southern, Gardner-Webb, Kennesaw State, Monmouth and RMU.
The Colonials joined the Big South as an associate member June 15 and were scheduled to play in the conference in the fall of 2021. But RMU will be an official conference opponent this spring and be eligible for the Big South championship and automatic berth to the postseason.
Robert Morris will play Monmouth at Joe Walton Stadium on March 13, renewing a rivalry that dates to 1994. The teams haven’t met since 2014.
Robert Morris’ Big South spring schedule also includes a home game against Gardner-Webb on April 10 and contests at Charleston Southern on March 20 and Kennesaw State on April 3.
The week of April 11-17 is open to allow any games impacted by the covid-19 pandemic to be played.
