Robert Morris basketball players earn Horizon League honors

Three Robert Morris basketball players were awarded Horizon League postseason honors Monday, as voted on by the league’s head coaches.

Fifth-year forward Kahliel Spear was named to the second team and junior guard Enoch Cheeks earned third-team recognition for the Colonials men’s basketball team. Spear also was named to the All-Horizon League defensive team.

In addition, sophomore forward Phoenix Gedeon earned third-team laurels, the first All-League honor for an RMU women’s basketball player since the Colonials joined the Horizon League in June of 2020. This season, Gedeon averaged 13.3 points and 8.5 rebounds, both team-highs. She ranked third in the conference in rebounds and seventh in scoring.

Spear is averaging 15.7 points and 8.2 rebounds and has started all 31 games this season. He ranks 10th in the league in scoring and fifth in rebounding and is shooting 51.1% (186 for 364) from the field.

Earlier this season, Spear set a new RMU career record for blocks and now has 99 in 81 games. He also is the 15th player in program history to surpass 1,000 points and 500 rebounds. Spear has 1,134 points and 594 rebounds in three seasons.

Cheeks leads the Colonials in scoring with an average of 16.0 points per game, as well as in steals (55) and ranks second in assists (99) and blocks (36). He is ninth in Horizon League in scoring, 12th in field goal percentage at 46.1% (170 for 369) and assists (3.41 per game), third in blocks (1.24 pg) and fourth in steals (1.90 pg).

Robert Morris (15-16) is set to host IUPUI in the first round of the Horizon League Tournament at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the UPMC Events Center.
