Resurfacing the track, the potential to serve as host for national events and a new name are part of Robert Morris’ partnership with race organizer P3R. As a result, the Neville Island facility will be renamed the P3R Track & Field Complex.

Robert Morris made the announcement Wednesday at a news conference at the RMU Island Sports Complex.

P3R has long been a supporter of running events in the Pittsburgh area, including organizing the annual DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon. P3R is also working with SportsPittsburgh to bring national events to Neville Island when the upgrades are complete.

Robert Morris officials predict the upgrades to the track will assist the Colonials in serving as hosts to competitions. The location will be one of the sites of the National Senior Games in 2023.

“P3R is one of the most visible brands within the Pittsburgh region,” Robert Morris athletic director Chris King said in a statement, “and we are appreciative of starting a long-term partnership for youth, high school, college and community events. We’re grateful to P3R CEO and RMU alumnus Troy Schooley for bringing the premier partnership together. P3R has made a substantial investment in RMU Athletics.”

“With our Kids of STEEL program, we focus on teaching kids at a young age the importance of movement,” P3R CEO Troy Schooley said. “We have seen kids from our program that participate in events go on to attend RMU for track and field, and we want to continue to build that relationship and give these young student-athletes the best opportunities for their futures, along with so many others in our region that strive to live an active lifestyle by getting out and moving with P3R.”

The RMU Island Sports Center opened in 1998 and was purchased by Robert Morris in 2004. The track and field complex was constructed at the site in 2005.
