Pittsburgh Riverhounds defender Jesse Williams (23) and Mohamed Traore of Las Vegas Lights FC battle for possession Saturday, April 16, 2022.

The Pittsburgh Riverhounds took their first loss of the season Saturday night, losing 1-0 to Las Vegas Lights FC.

It was the first meeting between the Riverhounds (4-1-1) and Lights (4-3), who began play in the USL Championship as an expansion team in 2018.

Las Vegas scored the game’s lone goal in the 27th minute. Alvaro Quezada stole a ball in the Riverhounds’ defensive half and quickly sent a pass ahead to Danny Trejo, who got past defender Arturo Ordóñez and shot into the bottom-right corner of the net.

Trejo leads the USL Championship with six goals in seven games.

The Riverhounds’ best chance to tie came in the 80th minute when a Dane Kelly header off a corner kick went over the crossbar.

“We just didn’t put enough urgency or energy into the game,” Riverhounds coach Bob Lilley said in a release. “Obviously the goal was a mistake, but we weren’t creating chances and there wasn’t enough impetus going forward.”

The Riverhounds will be back in action Tuesday when they visit MLS team FC Cincinnati in the third round of the U.S. Open Cup at 7:30 p.m. The Riverhounds are 1-5 all-time against MLS clubs.
