If you are a Pirates fan looking for a guy to give you great background on the Boston Red Sox during Ben Cherington’s time there, check out Alex Speier.
He has covered the Red Sox for 17 years. Speier currently works for the Boston Globe and NESN. He also wrote a book called “Homegrown” about the 2018 World Series winning edition of the team at Fenway Park.
Cherington, who was just named general manager of the Pirates on Monday, had left Boston by then. He had been working in the Toronto Blue Jays front office since 2016. But much of the talent on the Red Sox roster was either scouted, drafted or acquired by Cherington prior to his departure in 2015.
In our Wednesday podcast, Speier tells us about Cherington’s influence on that club, how he steered the 2013 team to a World Series trophy as general manager and why things went so badly for him and the Red Sox in 2014 and 2015.
