Pitt’s Olivia Babcock, who was the AVCA Freshman of the Year last season, has helped the Panthers reach No. 1 in the nation for the first time.

In Dan Fisher’s tenure as Pitt’s women’s volleyball coach, the program has stacked “firsts”: first ACC championship, first Elite Eight appearance, first No. 1 seed in an NCAA Tournament, first Final Four appearance.

Now the program has another milestone under the 12th-year coach. On Monday, for the first time in program history, the Panthers (3-0) ascended to the No. 1 spot in the American Volleyball Coaches Association poll. Pitt, coming off its third consecutive trip to the national semifinals, began the season at No. 4 and moved up to No. 3 after the first week.

This past week, Texas and Nebraska, which were 1-2 last week, lost, moving Pitt into the top spot.

Penn State, which also is undefeated (5-0) jumped from No. 7 to No. 3. The Nittany Lions visit Pitt on Sept. 18 for a nonconference showdown at 7 p.m. at Petersen Events Center.
