Pirates trade cash to Oakland A's for outfielder Dustin Fowler
The Pittsburgh Pirates acquired outfielder Dustin Fowler from the Oakland A’s in exchange for cash considerations Wednesday.
The 6-foot, 198-pound Fowler is a left-handed hitter who last played in the major leagues in 2018, when he batted .224 with three doubles, two triples, six home runs and 23 RBIs in 69 games with the A’s.
Fowler, 26, batted .277 with seven triples, 25 home runs and 89 RBIs in 130 games at Triple-A Las Vegas in 2019, then spent last season at the A’s alternate training site in San Jose. Fowler was drafted by the New York Yankees in the 18th round in 2013, then was one of three prospects traded to Oakland in July 2017 in exchange for pitcher Sonny Gray.
The Pirates completed the trade just hours after director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk said outfielder Anthony Alford, who had surgery on his right elbow in September, is limited defensively. The Pirates previously signed outfielder Brian Goodwin to compete for the starting job in center field.
To make room for Fowler on the 40-man roster, the Pirates placed left-handed pitcher Austin Davis (sprained elbow) on the 60-day injured list.
