Pirates’ Steven Brault shut down from throwing because of shoulder strain
Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Steven Brault has been “shut down” for at least two weeks because of a left shoulder muscle strain, the team announced Monday.
A left-hander who made 19 starts last season and was arguably the best member of the Pirates’ rotation from June through August, Brault has allowed four hits and two runs in two spring appearances (2 1/3 innings).

The Pirates said a throwing status for the 27-year-old will be determined when he is re-assessed in two weeks. Brault will remain with the team during his rehab progression.
Brault had a 2.87 ERA over 14 games (13 starts) between May 24 and Sept. 1 last season. He has bounced between Triple-A and the majors and the rotation and bullpen over the past three-plus seasons.

Brault entered spring training as a frontrunner for a spot in the starting rotation. Veteran nonroster invitee Derek Holland is his primary competition to be the fifth starter.
