Pittsburgh Pirates players Steven Brault and Josh Bell will resume their baseball careers this week at PNC Park, but during the covid-19 break, they showed off another skill in a recording studio.

Brault and Bell joined former players Ozzie Smith, Bernie Williams and Nick Swisher and Sharon Robinson, daughter of baseball pioneer Jackie Robinson, plus cast members from the musical “Hadestown,” in recording two videos.

The video “Wait For Me” features Brault and Grammy Award winner Reeve Carney sharing the role of “Orpheus.” Bell and Tony Award winner Andre DeShields share the role of “Hermes.”

The collaboration was inspired by Brault’s recently produced album “A Pitch at Broadway,” which features songs from 12 Broadway musicals. Brault also has sung the national anthem twice before games at PNC Park.

“I’ve always loved Broadway,” Brault said in a statement released by his publicist, “and when I heard that my cover of ‘Wait For Me’ had caught Anais’ (Mitchell, Hadestown composer) attention, I was floored.”

DeShields said, “Steven Brault made a pitch at Broadway, and I knocked it out of the park. It was a match made in heaven, or rather Hadestown, since we both have `Damn Yankees’ on our résumés, he as the young Joe Hardy in a high school production, and I as Mr. Applegate in a regional one.

“I hope the fans have as much fun watching the videos as we had making them.”

De Shields is a distant relative of Cleveland Indians outfielder Delino DeShields, who may bat against Brault this season when MLB games resume.
