The Pirates selected Appalachian State’s Jack Hartman in the fourth round of the MLB draft Thursday, June 11, 2020.

The Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday signed right-handed relief pitcher Jack Hartman, the team’s fourth-round selection (108th overall) in the 2020 draft.

Hartman was 1-0 with four saves, a 3.00 ERA and 22 strikeouts in 10 appearances (12 innings) at Appalachian (N.C.) State. He is one of four right-handed pitchers the Pirates drafted this year and the fourth-highest player chosen by MLB in school history.

“Jack hasn’t been pitching for very long but already shows very promising stuff with a fastball/slider combination that we believe has a chance to be very effective at the professional level,” Pirates general manager Ben Cherington said in statement.

“He’s a strong, physical pitcher with strong character and work ethic. We look forward to working with Jack in a Pirates uniform.”

In his first season at Appalachian State in 2019, Hartman recorded 26 strikeouts in 21⅔ innings over 20 appearances.

He also has played for the College of Central Florida (2018), where he pitched in relief and hit .310 in 25 games. In 2017, he played for Tallahassee (Fla.) Community College.

The Pirates have signed three of their six draft picks and have agreed to terms with pitcher Jared Jones, selected in the second round.
