Pirates call up Roansy Contreras to start against Boston
The Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday recalled right-hander pitcher Roansy Contreras from Triple-A Indianapolis and designated reliever Austin Brice for assignment.
Catcher Jose Godoy was optioned to Indianapolis while catcher Tyler Heineman (right groin strain) was reinstated from the 10-day injured list.
Contreras started Wednesday evening in the second game of a three-game series at PNC Park against the Boston Red Sox.
He last started for the Pirates on July 7, the same day he was optioned to Indianapolis. At the major league level this year, he owns a 3-2 record and 3.78 ERA over nine starts.
Contreras made four starts for the Indians since July 7, going 1-0 with a 3.86 ERA and 22 strikeouts.
The Pirates selected the contract of Brice on Aug. 12 and he made two appearances with the team, most recently Wednesday, when he pitched two perfect innings in relief in a 5-3 loss to the Red Sox.
Godoy appeared in five games for the Pirates, going hitless in seven at-bats.
Before going on the 10-day injured list Aug. 4, Heineman was slashing .202/.257/.235 with a home run and 10 RBIs through 35 games with the Pirates.
