Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher David Bednar helps first grade students with their throwing on Wednesday, April 27, 2022, at Mars Primary Center in Mars. The Pittsburgh Pirates organization donated baseball equipment to the school to be used in their physical education classes.

Pittsburgh Pirates relief pitcher David Bednar made a trip home Wednesday morning, and he brought some gear with him.

The Mars native made a surprise visit to see the first grade students at Mars Area Primary Center to deliver baseball equipment for physical education classes.

Sara Coon, the health and physical education teacher at Mars Primary Center, reached out to the Pirates to request baseball equipment so she could include the sport in her curriculum. The school didn’t have any baseball equipment and the students often ask to play baseball in her class.

The Pirates and Bednar fulfilled the request and donated gloves, bats and balls to the school.

Bednar spent the morning signing autographs and instructing the students in the fundamentals of the game during a baseball workshop.
