Pirates, Reds won't make up postponed games Monday
The two games postponed in Cincinnati because a Reds player tested positive for covid-19 won’t be played Monday, the Pittsburgh Pirates announced Sunday afternoon.
Manager Derek Shelton said he was not told why there won’t be a doubleheader Monday when both teams are idle.
“Major League Baseball has decided, protocol-wise, that they did not want us to play Monday,” he said. “What goes into that decision happens a lot higher than me.”
There are two more series remaining this season between the teams. Shelton said the games will be played, but new dates have not been announced by MLB officials.
That makes five Pirates games pushed to later in the season after they were postponed by another team’s positive tests.
The Pirates are scheduled to play seven-inning doubleheaders against the Cardinals on Aug. 27 in St. Louis and Sept. 18 at PNC Park to make up the three games postponed last week.
The season will resume Tuesday at PNC Park against the Cleveland Indians, with the Pirates (4-14) facing 42 games in 41 days. They have played only twice since Aug. 9.
Shelton said starting pitchers for the three games will be JT Brubaker, Steven Brault and Trevor Williams. Derek Holland, who was scheduled to start Sunday, will pitch later in the week.
