The Pittsburgh Pirates recalled pitcher Mike Burrows, promoting the 24-year-old right-hander 18 months after he underwent Tommy John surgery.
Burrows is expected to make his major league debut on Saturday at the New York Yankees, pitching piggyback with rookie Paul Skenes.
Burrows is the Pirates’ No. 16 prospect, per MLB Pipeline, but ranked in the top 10 before his surgery in April 2023.
He was 1-1 with a 4.06 ERA and 1.41 WHIP, 45 strikeouts and 15 walks in 37 2/3 innings over 10 appearances, including nine starts, at Triple-A Indianapolis. Burrows also made two starts in the Florida Complex League and four at Low-A Bradenton this season as part of his rehabilitation.
To make room on the 28-man active roster, the Pirates optioned rookie right-hander Jared Jones to the Florida Complex League Pirates. Jones made his final start of the season in Friday’s 4-2 win over the Yankees.
