Pirates place LHP Dillon Peters on 10-day IL, recall RHP Miguel Yajure from Indianapolis
Dillon Peters is the latest Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher who will end his season on the injured list.
The Pirates placed the left-handed Peters (1-2, 3.71) on the 10-day injured list Friday with a low back strain and recalled right-hander Miguel Yajure (0-1, 3.86) from Triple-A Indianapolis.
Yajure is active for Friday night’s game at the Philadelphia Phillies.
Peters started Monday at Cincinnati, allowing four runs on four hits and two walks with three strikeouts in three innings in the 9-5 loss. Peters also drew a walk in the third inning, reached second on a single by Cole Tucker and scored on Yoshi Tsutsugo’s RBI single.
“It actually aggravated him during the game that day, when he was running the bases,” Shelton said, noting that Peters reinjured the low back strain that sidelined him from Aug. 28 until Sept. 7. “He had the back thing earlier, then it flared up again and has not gotten any better so that’s why we had to make the move.”
Peters is the fifth Pirates starter to incur a season-ending injury, joining right-handers Chase De Jong (left knee), Trevor Cahill (left calf strain) and Bryse Wilson (left hamstring) and left-hander Steven Brault (left lat strain) on the IL. Another starter, right-hander JT Brubaker (right shoulder), is eligible to come off the 10-day IL but isn’t ready to return.
“Right now, with the way our starting pitching has been banged up, we’re going to have to be creative for the last 10 games,” Shelton said.
Shelton said he hasn’t decided whether to use Yajure, 23, one of four players acquired from the New York Yankees in the Jameson Taillon trade in January, as a starter or out of the bullpen.
“I think you could end up seeing him do both,” Shelton said. “We’re going to need length at some different times, so we’re going to work from there. He’s been stretched out to four or five innings. We can expect that in the middle.”
Yajure started two games for the Pirates this season. He made his Pirates debut on April 21, allowing four runs on four hits and two walks with four strikeouts in a 5-2 loss at Detroit, and pitched five scoreless innings against San Francisco on May 14.
But Yajure missed six weeks with right forearm discomfort. Since returning on Aug. 19, Yajure was 1-2 with a 2.70 ERA in six starts for Indianapolis, throwing six scoreless innings last Friday against St. Paul.
Shelton called Yajure’s fastball command a “work in progress.”
“We’re still working on it, in terms of consistency,” Shelton said. “That’s probably going to be the biggest thing we’re going to focus on once he’s here.”
