The Pittsburgh Pirates swapped left-handers in their bullpen Sunday, placing Sam Howard on the 10-day injured list and recalling Austin Davis from Triple-A Indianapolis.

Howard, who is dealing with tendinitis in his right knee, was coming off a career-worst performance Friday night, when he allowed six runs on four hits in 2/3 of an inning against the Cleveland Indians. He also had a 34 at-bat hitless streak against left-handed hitters come to an end when Eddie Rosario singled in the seventh inning of that game.

“It’s something that he’s been dealing with on and off,” Pirates manager Derek Shelton said, “but he felt it in the last outing, so we made the decision to IL him.”

Davis tossed a scoreless inning against Miami on June 6, his lone appearance this season before Sunday’s game against Cleveland when he had one walk and one strikeout in the ninth inning of the 2-1 loss.

In eight games with Indianapolis, Davis has a 3.00 ERA, allowing three runs on one hit and four walks with 13 strikeouts in nine innings. He missed the first two months of the season with a left elbow sprain.
