Pirates place CF Bryan Reynolds on 10-day IL with right oblique strain

The Pittsburgh Pirates will be without Bryan Reynolds for an extended period, as the center fielder was placed on the 10-day injured list Monday with a right oblique strain.

“That hurts us,” Pirates manager Derek Shelton told AT&T SportsNet before Monday’s game at Miami. “We just have to keep grinding through it.”

Reynolds, who was removed in the seventh inning of Sunday’s game at Milwaukee with right-side discomfort, is slashing .261/.343/.465 with 11 doubles, three triples, 15 home runs and 32 RBIs in 83 games. An oblique strain typically can require a recovery of 28-35 days, which means Reynolds could be out until mid-August.

“It’s not something that we’re expecting him to miss a ton of time with but the more information we get, we’ll probably be able to talk more on it,” Shelton said. “When you have something like this, you don’t want it to turn into something that magnifies and ends up being a longer length of time. We just have to be on the safe side here.”

To replace Reynolds, the Pirates activated Jake Marisnick from the 60-day injured list.

Marisnick was out after having surgery on his left thumb May 12. He batted .163 (8 for 49) with two doubles and one RBI in 22 games before injuring his thumb on a diving catch.

To make room on the 40-man roster, the Pirates also designated left-handed reliever Cam Vieaux, who had a 14.40 ERA in five appearances after allowing eight runs (seven earned) on six hits and three walks on 56 pitches in one inning in a 19-2 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers on July 1.
