Pirates hire Tony Leo as assistant athletic trainer

The Pittsburgh Pirates announced Monday the hiring of Tony Leo as assistant athletic trainer for the major league club, completing the final piece of their sports performance staff.

Leo served as infection control prevention coordinator for the Oakland A’s this past season. Prior to that, he spent 23 seasons with the Minnesota Twins, where he worked with Pirates manager Derek Shelton when Leo was head athletic trainer and Shelton was Twins bench coach.

Leo previously worked for six seasons as the Twins’ assistant athletic trainer and six seasons for their Triple-A affiliate.

Last week, the Pirates hired Rafael Freitas as their head athletic trainer. Freitas spent the last four seasons as assistant athletic trainer with the Milwaukee Brewers.
