Pirates third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes works out at Pirate City in Bradenton.

Pittsburgh Pirates general manager Ben Cherington said Sunday on his weekly radio show that Ke’Bryan Hayes, out with a wrist injury, will join the alternate site team for “a game or two” in Toledo.

The rookie third baseman was placed on the 10-day injured list April 4, a day after he hurt his wrist in the second game of the season against the Chicago Cubs. Hayes joined the Pirates for their nine-game road trip and has been swinging a bat, first in a batting cage and then hitting on the field for the first time Saturday in Milwaukee.

Cherington said on 93.7 FM that if Hayes performs without any problems he soon could return to the Pirates, who conclude their three-game series against the Brewers on Sunday, have Monday off and then play three games at the Detroit Tigers. The Pirates conclude their 10-day, nine-game road trip with a three-game weekend series at the Minnesota Twins.

The Pirates also announced right-handed pitcher Cody Ponce (forearm) was reinstated from the injured list and optioned to the alternate training site.
